Hoya, FAQs

Hoya - leaf spots

Question: Light small spots of incomprehensible origin appeared on the hoya leaves from the outside. It doesn't look like burnt ones, and dry ones too. What could it be? She feels like normal.

Irka: It's completely normal. Hoya always has small light green spots on the leaves - for this it is called "wax ivy." The young hoya does not have them, and with growing up they appear.

How to root hoya

Question: Tell me who knows, they gave a hoya handle, put it in a jar of water. It has been standing for a month, and silence... Maybe what am I doing wrong?

Lusi: February is not quite the time to take root. I also rooted the hoya in the water. One handle somewhere at that time, sat for a very long time, and the one in the summer - gave roots on the 5th day, I could not believe my eyes. Put in water with Kornevin.

irina-bahus: You need to root in spring or summer, if you need to root khoya in autumn or winter, you need to add root and put root in vermiculite, and not in water. If the hoya handle is rooted in water, take only boiled water and change it in a day or two so that it does not bloom. Hoyas are well rooted only in warmth and good lighting.

Hoya does not bloom

Question: I have a fleshy hoya (carnose) lives for three years, but has never bloomed on the northeast window (not shaded by anything). Tell me how to achieve flowering?

Veta: I made sure that choya carnosa simply needs a cool wintering for flowering. My scum hasn't bloomed in 15 years! And this year, after wintering at + 10-14C, it was just all in colors! By the way, the side is east. On the north, the hoya is too dark for this species.

Freya: My hoya carnosa blooms without cool wintering, even a hint of one - it stands in the same room with Mara, so we are not talking about coolness, and even over the battery, but already at the moment it is growing brand new peduncles on young lashes, and even before leaves! But it is lighting that plays a key role - the best window is bright east, southeast, northwest at least. It's dark in the north! You can hang a lamp next to it, you need not increase the daylight hours, but increase the intensity of the lighting.

Mila: There are many reasons why hoya does not bloom, and accordingly a number of requirements are put forward for hoya to bloom, many of which are controversial:

  • lots of sun
  • cold wintering
  • age not less than 2-3 years
  • the handle must be from a flowering specimen, otherwise it may not bloom
  • cramped pot
  • blooms on shoots at least 30 cm long
  • phosphorus fertilizers

And now, based on the experience of a long-time hoi lover, I will refute some of these statements:

  1. a lot of sun is, of course, great. But it blooms in people both on the western and eastern windows. Moreover, there are examples when it bloomed in a semi-dark school or hospital corridor, with one small window, etc.
  2. cold wintering is not a guarantee that it will bloom. Many have tried, but the result is zero (and others, like Freya, do not have any special wintering - and it blooms!)
  3. there are examples when flowered at the age of about a year!
  4. sometimes, cuttings-brothers taken from one flowering specimen behave differently: one blooms, the other does not (and from non-blooming khoi, it happens, "children" bloom without problems)
  5. there is nothing to add here - the pot must be tight, and the point
  6. there are longer shoots, but it does not bloom - and that's it
  7. some bloom without any fertilizers (especially in hospitals, schools, etc.), without spraying, without rinsing under the shower and other good conditions. In the same way, many do not bloom even with fertilizers and shamanic dances around the plant.

OUTCOME. We can say that in terms of flowering, khoya carnosa is the most capricious and unpredictable of all khoi! Try to figure it out point by point, considering all the options.

Question: If the shoots are wrapped around bamboo sticks, will it not interfere with flowering?

Mila: You can wrap it around anything - this does not interfere with flowering. Only bamboo sticks tend to rot in the soil and then break. Hoya, if it grows well, will quickly become heavy on bamboo sticks. Maybe you should immediately choose something simpler?

How to water hoya

Question: Regularly water the hoya, with drying, but does not dry out. There is carnosis on the east window. Sun until 10-11 in the morning. I stopped liking the lower leaves. The color burned out and to the touch of other steel. Gradually, the number of light leaves increases. They fall off. The leaves do not turn yellow, but brighten and become lethargic, and not elastic-waxy.

Tamarix: If the yellowing of the leaves progresses, then the roots are the cause. Wait for the earthen lump to dry, and then tap the pot on all sides against the edge of the table. Turn the plant "upside down," holding it in your hands at the base, and pull the pot up. It should be filmed effortlessly.

jonny: I think the wrong watering regime always causes leaf lethargy and rot. Hoya between watering needs to be thoroughly dried. Excessive lighting can be the cause of leaf lightening.

Mila: I also tend to think that leaf lethargy is from overflowing. You write that you dry, but it does not dry out, and for carnose it is not good. The earthen lump should dry out well.

Veta: You rarely need to water - this is when you realized that it was already completely dry.

Natalie: Hoya carnosa needs to be watered again when it has stood completely dry for several days. Even in the heat, it needs to be watered after the ground completely dries. But other types of hoya are less tolerant of drying: hoya bella, hoya vaetti, matilda and others - we water after drying the ground, when the soil is COMPLETELY dry, the next day, in hot times (when above 25-26S) and after 2-3 days, when cool (22-23C).

Hoya wax ivy - can you keep at home

Q: Can I keep hoya wax ivy at home?

Devi: Of course, you can, there are myths that allegedly she expels men in the house, but believe on the forum a lot of living examples, real people of collectors of hoya of all kinds and no one had any health problems or in personal life. Hoya willingly blooms and pleases its owners, and in addition, perfectly cleans the air from the emissions of household appliances and building materials.
