Dieffenbachia, frequently asked questions

Diffenbachia - reproduction

Question: Do everyone easily root Dieffenbachia cuttings in water, and I drop leaves and rot?

Natalie: In order for diffenbachia to take root safely in water and not rot (loss of leaves is quite acceptable), then you need to take clean water, not boiled, but preferably filtered, add 4-5 tablets of activated carbon to half a liter, do not keep a jar of water in the light (you can wrap it in a napkin) and water periodically change to fresh. You can also put on rooting in a weak fertilizer solution. Any fertilizer for ornamental and deciduous plants, taken in a dose 4 times less than recommended for root feeding.

If the decay (the bottom of the handle becomes slick and darkens) has begun, then you can cut off the spoiled part of the stem to healthy tissue, rinse the handle in running water, put it in fresh water, to which add a few drops of phytosporin. After 2-3 days, replace the water with fresh water, add phytosporin again, but already 2 times less. If there is no phytosporin, add ground cinnamon to the tip of the knife.

If diffenbachia is rooted in the ground, then it does not need to be covered with a bag or can, but the handle must be sprayed 2 times a day. And the soil should be maintained only in a slightly moist state. Of course, the soil must be sterilized (withstand about 3 minutes in the microwave), and the cut of the cuttings is sprinkled with crushed charcoal.

Kroky: A possible reason for the decay of the trunk in the water is touching the bottom of the jar with a cut. Try to attach somehow so that the cut hangs in the water. You can also sprinkle the cuts with coal. Leaves, by the way, have the right to turn yellow and fall off in the process, do not be alarmed. And cuttings from the trunk need 2-3 rings.

aie13: Rooting me exclusively in water: 3 litre can of boiled water + 5 activated charcoal tablets, wrapping the can in a black bin bag (to keep the can dark). The crown in the cut state is usually about a meter long, I dry the cut for 2-3 hours and into the jar, it was very correctly noticed earlier that the cut should not touch the bottom - otherwise, decay is inevitable in 50%. After 3-4 weeks, small roots appear - now into the ground. Inevitably, I lose a few lower leaves.

Question: I'm trying to root the diffenbachia stalk, but nothing comes of it!

Diffenbachia reproduction - in the Popular houseplants section

polin: When rooting cuttings, diffenbachia noticed an interesting trend - if the cuttings are apical, then the roots appear longer than if the cuttings from the middle of the trunk are cut out (without a tip). Maybe with two tops the process of rooting is naturally delayed?

Kroky: Indeed, the higher up the trunk, the longer the roots grow. Basal sections can have roots in a week. Therefore, it makes little sense to compare the rate of emergence of roots in different people. Even in thin, recently grown shoots, roots will also appear faster than on old thick ones. But for the second, large leaves will then go faster.

Lelya: I have my bump (the leaves have dropped everything) has been sitting in the water for about 20 days and only now there is a bump and a hint of a new leaf.

Elena: Dieffenbachia rooted twice. The first time in the ground under a jar, the second in water with activated carbon. The second method is much easier, my diffenbachia gave roots in two weeks.

Diffenbachia after pruning

Question: The trunk of my diffenbachia began to come bare. It's not pretty. I want to put the second one in this pot. Tell me if I cut off the crown and root it in the water, which will become with the mother plant. How will diffenbachia continue to grow without a crown?

polin: Without the crown - will start side shoots. That's all. I chop my healthy as for firewood every 2 years.

Alla Viktorovna: I also cut mine in half, the top took root in the water, and the stump gave a new escape from the upper kidney in the area of the "lintel" on the trunk. Now I have two diffenbachia!

Dieffenbachia leaves dry

как пересадить диффенбахию

Question: The other day I acquired Diffenbachia, and when I brought it home, I found several black spots on the leaves. They increase in size.

Natalie: Your diffenbachia leaves do not turn yellow, but dry, acquiring a dark, blackish color. This is a sign of waterlogging - it was systematically flooded in the store. It is necessary not only to transplant into new soil, but also to observe the irrigation regime. And also apply fungicides from root rots, ask in the store drugs that help with phytophthora, you can pour a solution of phytosporin.

  • If the leaves of diffenbachia dry and become light, the color is like parchment - the reason is overdrying or too dry (and hot) air. Dieffenbachia likes when the humidity is about 50-60%. If spraying 2-3 times a day does not help, you need to purchase a humidifier or cover the batteries with wet terry towels.

Q: Why do the leaf ends of Dieffenbachia dry?

Natalie: In such cases, it is customary to sin immediately on dry air indoors. Indeed, if the room is very hot and dry, the leaf ends of diffenbachia can dry, but if the plant is not near the heating system, then dry air is not always the reason, or not the only reason for dry leaf tips and edges. More often, the reason is the drying of an earthen coma, lack of nutrition, especially in large specimens that have not been transplanted for several years, as well as pests - a tick or thrips, which are quite difficult to notice on variegated leaves.

Diffenbachia has yellow leaves

как пересадить диффенбахию

Question: Dieffenbachia sharply began to yellow leaves, visual inspection did not show pests, what could be the reason?

Alexander: If the leaves turn sharply yellow, this is an overflow. And the roots start to rot. It is necessary to ventilate them, loosen the ground and not water them.

Ksu: Check the ground at about 2-2.5cm deep in the pot. If it has not been watered for several days, and the ground is wet (not just wet, but wet) - overflow. It is better to pull it out of the pot as soon as possible, and check the roots. Surely rotting. Cut rotten, sprinkle cuts with charcoal (or activated), although I dump everything left of the root system, in coal, for disinfection. You can even hold it before "dumping," after cutting it in a fungicide solution. Plant in slightly wet ground and do not water for several days, it is better to spray. Then water a little, but more often.

Natalie: If the yellowing of leaves with a lemon color (no browning, rather blanching of the color), a spider mite is a possible cause. It is very difficult to notice when it is in small quantities. A characteristic feature is yellowing without certain boundaries - blurred fuzzy spots. Try looking for pests on the back of the still green leaves closest to the yellowed ones. Symptoms - see photo ticks.

What kind of pot does Dieffenbachia need?

Question: Does Dieffenbachia like a spacious pot or a cramped one?

Kroky: It grows so fast, the spacious pot gets tight very quickly. Choose spacious - there can be about two to three times more free space than a root lump. Do not forget that diffenbachia is a powerful plant and pot must be sustainable. But if you immediately take a very large pot (there are 4-5 times more places than a root lump), then the risk of waterlogging increases. Therefore, in a large pot, be careful with watering, or make a higher layer of drainage.

What kind of land is needed

Question: what kind of land does Dieffenbachia need?

Natalie: The earth needs porous and nutritious, with a good share of humus. Therefore, store soils in their pure form are not suitable (they consist of fibrous peat seasoned with mineral fertilizers). Therefore, it is better to make soil from individual components:

  • 3 part of humus sheeting, 1 part of sod earth, 1 part of small pebbles or zeolite granules, 1 part of humus (compost earth)
  • 2 part of the garden land from under vegetables, under which organic matter was applied (cucumber tomatoes), 1 part of the turf land, 1 part of the coconut substrate (briquettes or chips).

Read about where to get turf or leafy land: About soil and plant transplantation, as well as Soil for plants

It is very important to sterilize the soil before transplanting diffenbachia, especially if you bring it from the garden. If the volume of land is small, you can steam it in the oven on a baking sheet. If the volume is large (bucket or more), then you can spill it with a very large amount of boiling water. I do this: I pour a little less than a bucket of earth into an old pillowcase, place it in a 15-liter bucket and fill it with boiling water (it goes somewhere 6-7 liters). I leave for 30-40 minutes, take it out and hang it so that the water is glass for about a day. Then I put it on a film and dry it. Boiling water does not completely sterilize the soil (this requires boiling), but it kills pests, larvae and eggs.

After planting diffenbachia, I water it several times with humic drugs, or use Baikal EM-1.

Diffenbachia stretched out

Question: My diffenbachia has a trunk stretched out and something very long petioles, what could be connected with? I can't wait to cut it, only now it's winter...

Gray: Stretched they because she clearly lacks lighting! Now is not the best time of year for home plants. Dark. Either move closer to the window or arrange additional lighting. Hang up a regular daylight lamp and light up in the evening. For example, I do this and light up many plants until 24 o'clock in the evening. If you move closer to the window, then pay attention to the heating batteries. Dieffenbachia do not like dry air, as well as all other plants. So, it is necessary to humidify the air in the room in order to increase the humidity! It's not worth cutting now! Wait until spring, when all plants begin the growing season. Transplantation is also desirable in the spring. Do not arrange additional stress for the plant.

Question: What to do, the barrel is exposed?

Natalie: Diffenbachia is characterized by the gradual exposure of the trunk from below, but this is normal if it grows well, gives new leaves. However, if the new leaves are smaller than the old ones, and the petioles are too long, then the plant clearly lacks light.

Shlomo: Yellowing of the lower leaves may be normal if the plant is large and there are many healthy leaves, but it may be the result of draft action or lack of light. It is possible to highlight diffenbachia, it develops well even with the complete replacement of sunlight with artificial light, and has a positive attitude to lengthening daylight hours.

Diffenbachia flowering

диффенбахия цветок

Question: Diffenbachia grew just fine, then began to bloom. I heard that flowers need to be removed?

polin: If diffenbachia begins to bloom and you want to see the bloom, then it just needs enhanced feeding. My bush blossom. All "oppression" was expressed in one sheet of smaller than usual size and only. You just need a mandatory weekly feeding with both mineral and organic fertilizers during the flowering period and after it for at least a month. Then you can switch to the usual feeding mode.

If we proceed from the fact that when we need to support foliage, then we feed those where there is more nitrogen, i.e. as usual "for decorative and deciduous." But, since it still blooms, I did one dressing "for decorative blooms," where there is more potassium and phosphorus.
