Comment from Faust:
Because of its original appearance, Papilio is actively grown by foreign flower farms. With their help, a lot of interesting hybrids have been obtained, so the real Papilio is almost never found, but the hybrids derived on its basis are in huge numbers. Papilio, unfortunately, is often not of very good quality there either. First, good specimens are more expensive and do not end up in Russia. Secondly, due to intensive cultivation on an industrial scale and the selection of various non-typical forms, the typical form gradually lost its original appearance. Often the flowers of a plant have a slightly different appearance than a typical specimen. Their general background is almost white rather than yellow-green, the shape of the petals has lost its originality, they are more widely open and have a round-ovoid shape without bending the petals in the throat. Often slightly deformed at dissolution.
For example, when crossing Papilio with some white hippeastrums, a very small number of interesting new varieties can be obtained, and the rest will look like the Matirin plant Papilio, but the general background of the flower may already be lighter, and the shape of the flower will be like that of the specimen from which pollen was taken. Well, do not throw them away in nurseries, where they get new hybrid varieties, they go on sale as Papilio, because they are almost worse in a decorative sense, and so on. Therefore, many Papilio in industrial culture are not quite typical.
In general, buying a species plant close to a typical specimen is more reliable in organizations that grow wild species of bulbs.
