Hippeastrum evansiae

Synonyms: Amaryllis evansiae Traub & I.S.Nelson.

The species was classified in 1956.

Habitat: Native to Bolivia (vicinity of Santa Cruz and Cochabamba). The habitat extends from sandy, open plains to accumulations of almost pure peat, concentrated on mountain sides from 200 m. - 700 m. Some plants live in the open sun, but most grow in forests covering the low eastern foothills of the Andes. The soil there is always exhausted.

Description: Usually on a peduncle 3-4 graceful, pale yellow or greenish yellow flowers with a bright green throat, with a beautiful wavy edge.

This species has several varieties: with pink petals, with various forms of perianth (from neat graceful to slightly careless). The size of the flowers depends on the variety.

Hippeastrum evansiae is similar to Hippeastrum anzaldoi, some botanists classify them as a single species.

Features of cultivation: Evergreen species, grows well in depleted sandy soil. When planting, the bulbs are not deeply buried, about half. This species is very photophilous. In winter, growth slows down, during this period watering is minimal. It blooms in spring.

Interesting: Thanks to this species, the first yellow-flowering hybrids were obtained. California breeder C. D. Cochran, crossing Hippeastrum evansiae, bred the yellow hybrid Yellow Pioneer. Later varieties such as Lemon Lime and Green Goddess appeared, with cream and yellow flowers.

In South America, these long-tubed species are known as "azucenas," translated from Spanish as "white lily." Fragrant, graceful look. Bulbs are quite large and can reach 12 cm in diameter. A very interesting view for selection.
