Hippeastrum blossfeldiae

Synonyms: Amaryllis blossfeldiae (Traub & L.J. Doran)

Habitat: in the sand dunes of Brazil, 30 m above sea level. Bulbs sit deep in sandy soils in the open sun.

Description: Open, funnel-shaped flowers. Each petal has a slight swirl and twist, giving the flower an open, free shape. The flowers are fragrant, orange with a greenish-yellow star in the throat (there is a form with a lilac throat), at the tips of the petals at a white point. It blooms in spring. The plant is 40-50 cm high, on a peduncle 2-3 rather large (15-18 cm) flowers.

Description: The peduncle usually has 2-4 long-tubular white or pink, fragrant flowers with a yellow-green throat. Flower diameter: 15-18 cm, peduncle height about 60 cm, perianth length about 13 cm. Leaves are grayish-green, varieties with a purple tint are found.

Hippeastrum brasiliensis is distinguished from H. Solandraeflorum by its highly fragrant flowers and habitat. H. Solandraeflorum lives in the states of Goiás and Mato Grosso in northern Brazil and in Venezuela.
